The Wigry National Park was established in 1989 on the area of around 150 square kilometres. The most valuable element of the park are the numerous lakes, including Wigry Lake, which is the largest and second deepest lake in the Suwałki Region, and the Czarna Hańcza river, which is one of the most popular kayaking routes in Poland.
The Wigry National Park has a very interesting flora, with 18 species that are relicts from the last glacial period, 83 plant species under strict protection, and 15 species under partial protection. The Wigry National Park is mostly forests. The sprawling woods are dominated by pines and spruces, and in the northern part of the park, also oaks, lindens, alders, larches and ashes.
The wildlife is equally rich, with 51 mammal species. The park is also home to a number of species which, through species protection and nature reserves, have been saved from extinction, such as European beaver, which is the symbol of the national park, lynx, snow hare or wolf. The fish species found in the lakes include vendace, shelly, lake trout or catfish.
