Since the 1920s, Augustów has been a popular summer holiday destination, frequented by notable political and artistic figures. In 1970, the town was granted semi-health resort status. Despite Augustów not being considered a full-fledged health resort, the Budowlani (Builders) spa welcomed its first guests in 1976. The full health resort status was granted to Augustów in 1993.
In 1968, following the recognition of the town’s outstanding health qualities, the first boreholes were made, discovering healing water deposits. The local mineral water “Augustowianka” was first bottled in 1972. The water is drawn from one of the deepest intakes in Poland, located 482 m below ground in the heart of the Augustów Forest.
The woods of the Augustów Forest and numerous lakes in the region create a unique microclimate which benefits people suffering from respiratory, circulatory and rheumatic conditions.
Peloid treatments continue to be immensely popular among the spa guests. “Mud wraps” have an excellent impact on the health, beauty and well-being, and are frequently used to treat rheumatic, muscular and joint diseases. In 2015, a new peloid deposit was discovered in the town. The deposit was granted a quality certificate making it possible to use the peloid in cosmetic products.
